Coaching conversations building connections, creating psychological safety, and making more meaningful interactions.
Role of a coach:
Advising, telling, and directing are common communication styles of a manager. However, a coaching-based communication is vastly different. A good coach does not tell employees what to do or how to solve their problems. Instead, a coach helps employees think through complex situations and choose actions that lead to positive business results. “Coaching requires active listening, asking open-ended questions, and helping the employee reflect”.
On the surface, coaching and other communication styles may appear remarkably similar, because they are both commonly practiced by two individuals sitting down together to discuss what is getting in the way of the employee reaching his/her goals. In-depth, coaching has a significantly different impact.
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential”.
In general, when managers are asked to serve as coaches, they use their professional experience and expertise to help employees maximize their professional performance.
“Since most managers are not professionally trained coaches, it is important for Leaders and team leads to hone their coaching skills and take the time to support the employees around them”.
